Gaétan Mélinon

Wine Label

Gaétan Mélinon, a young winemaker from Domaine Mélinon in Villié-Morgon, honoured me by asking me to design his first label for his Beaujolais Villages. The illustration was very specific: a winemaker drawing wine from a barrel. The rest was up to the graphic designer. I chose the colours of France. The red is also a reference to red wine. In the background is a small village representing Villié-Morgon with its church with two steeples.

The ‘En l'Ollier’ label was created in 2020 for Gaétan Mélinon's special reserve. The choice of using the family coat of arms with the young winemaker's initials on the label gave rise to his logo. Name and place are inscribed on the coat of arms. Two fonts are used to complete the logo, one straight and formal for the text, the other more artistic but still legible and simple for the initials. In the form of two colours - either red or black - the streamlined logo will be used in a variety of commercial forms.
The label's design has changed over time. First of all, the young winegrower's desire to use the coat of arms made the label too empty and unoriginal. A sketch of the village of Villié-Morgon, also used on the Beaujolais-Nouveau label, in white was added to the black background.
